A little bit of literary magic in the heart of Leeds.

If you’re dreaming of a wedding surrounded by towering bookshelves, historic architecture and all the character of an old library, The Leeds Library on Commercial Street might just be the perfect place for you.
Tucked away in Leeds city centre, this beautiful historic building is one of Yorkshire’s most unique wedding venues. It’s particularly lovely for couples planning an intimate ceremony, a smaller celebration or a wedding day that feels a little different from the traditional ballroom setting.
I’ve had the pleasure of photographing two weddings at The Leeds Library in the past year, and it’s such a wonderful spot for couples who want their wedding photographs to feel full of character, atmosphere and personality.
My most recent wedding here was R&J’s, and their day was a brilliant example of just how much magic you can fit into a small city-centre wedding.
About The Leeds Library
Founded in 1768, The Leeds Library is the oldest subscription library of its kind in the UK. This Grade II* listed Georgian building is tucked away at 18 Commercial Street, right in the centre of Leeds, and offers a wonderfully atmospheric alternative to more traditional wedding venues.
It’s a venue with real character, from the shelves of books to the architectural details and the beautiful spiral staircases. For book lovers, history enthusiasts and couples who love a little whimsy, it’s an incredibly special place to get married.
The library is licensed for civil wedding ceremonies and offers exclusive hire for ceremonies and drinks receptions. It’s particularly well suited to intimate celebrations, with ceremony packages available for different guest numbers.
One of my favourite things about photographing weddings here is that you don’t need to travel far to find beautiful backdrops. The library itself offers so many opportunities for photographs, while the surrounding streets of Leeds provide plenty of opportunities for a few urban portraits, too.
R&J’s intimate library wedding
A walk through the heart of Leeds

For R&J’s wedding, I joined the morning preparations with R at a nearby hotel before we made our way towards the library. We’re starting this little story on the walk over, because honestly, it would be a shame not to include some of the photographs from our journey through town!
There’s something lovely about incorporating the city into a wedding day. Rather than rushing between locations in a car, we made our way through Leeds on foot, taking the Trinity Centre escalators and wandering through the streets towards the ceremony.
It made for some wonderfully entertaining photographs and captured a side of the day that felt relaxed, spontaneous and completely them.
These little in-between moments are a huge part of how I approach wedding photography. The photographs don’t have to be perfectly posed or planned to mean something. Sometimes, the walk to your ceremony becomes one of the most memorable parts of the story.
Bridal party photographs among the books
Once we arrived at The Leeds Library, we spent a little time taking photographs of the bridal party amongst the bookshelves before the ceremony began.
The surroundings are already so full of detail that you don’t need elaborate backdrops or lots of extra decoration. The books, the warm tones and the character of the building do so much of the work for you.
And R&J’s wedding party certainly brought their own personality to the day. Each member of the bridal party carried a book adorned with flowers as they made their way towards the ceremony, while one member of the groom’s party even carried a sword!
It’s these little personal touches that make intimate weddings so special. Every detail feels intentional, and there’s room for the couple’s personalities to shine through.

A heartfelt ceremony in the main library
The ceremony itself was beautiful and heartfelt, surrounded by the historic interiors of The Leeds Library.
There’s something particularly romantic about exchanging vows in a space filled with stories. With the books all around them and their closest people gathered together, R&J’s ceremony felt intimate in the loveliest possible way.
For couples considering a library wedding in Leeds, this is one of the things I think makes the venue so special. It isn’t about having the biggest room or the most extravagant setting. It’s about finding somewhere that feels meaningful, with an atmosphere that adds something to the experience.
From a photography perspective, I love documenting these moments as they naturally unfold: the expressions, the glances between family members, the laughter and the quieter moments that might otherwise pass by unnoticed.
My approach to cinematic wedding photography is always about bringing those moments together into a story that feels true to the day, rather than turning everything into a series of posed photographs.

Drinks, spiral staircases and candid moments
After the ceremony, everyone moved through to the area with the beautiful spiral staircases for the drinks reception.
It’s a lovely space for guests to mingle, catch up and celebrate, and it gives you another setting for photographs without needing to leave the building.
We spent some time taking the group photographs before letting the day unfold more naturally. There were plenty of candid moments to capture, with guests chatting, celebrating and enjoying being together.
I always want couples to have those photographs of the people who matter most to them, but I also want to document everything happening around those more formal moments. The hugs, the conversations, the laughter and the little interactions between people are all part of the story.
Couples portraits among the books
One of my favourite parts of R&J’s wedding came towards the end of my time at the library.
Once we’d finished the group photographs and captured plenty of candid moments, the guests made their way over to the reception venue. R&J and I stayed behind for a little while to create some couples portraits among the books.
This was such a lovely opportunity to slow things down.
With the guests moving on and the library becoming quieter, we could explore the space together and create something a little more artistic. The shelves, the lines of the architecture and the atmosphere of the room made the perfect backdrop for photographs that felt romantic, cinematic and a little bit otherworldly.
These are the moments I love most about photographing intimate weddings. You don’t always need to disappear for an hour to create beautiful portraits. Sometimes, all you need is a little breathing room, a gorgeous location and the freedom to enjoy being together.
For R&J, it was the perfect way to finish this part of their wedding story before they headed off to continue celebrating with their guests.

How much does a wedding at The Leeds Library cost?
If you’re considering getting married at The Leeds Library, it’s worth budgeting for both your venue hire and your registrar or celebrant.
According to the venue’s published 2027 wedding brochure, ceremony packages are priced according to guest numbers:
- Up to 30 guests: £2,500
- Up to 50 guests: £3,000
- Up to 80 guests: £4,400
