There is something incredibly special about photographing a Dunkeld House Hotel wedding. Nestled amongst ancient woodland in the heart of Perthshire, with the River Tay flowing through its grounds, it’s one of Scotland’s most beautiful venues for couples dreaming of an intimate wedding surrounded by nature.
As a Scotland wedding photographer, I’m always drawn to celebrations that feel authentic, personal, and completely unique, and this wedding was exactly that.
To honour the couple’s privacy, you’ll notice there are no names or recognisable faces throughout this blog apart from a few select images. Instead, these photographs focus on the atmosphere, the details, and the story of a day that was unmistakably theirs.
A Whimsical Woodland Wedding at Dunkeld House Hotel
With temperatures reaching an incredible 24°C, this Dunkeld House Hotel wedding felt more like a midsummer celebration than a typical Scottish wedding day.
The couple embraced a beautifully alternative style that perfectly complemented the woodland surroundings. The bride wore layers of flowing black tulle paired with a bespoke green corset, creating an effortlessly whimsical look that blended into the forest setting. The groom wore an outfit inspired by historic military dress, complete with a genuine ceremonial sword, making the two of them look as though they had stepped from the pages of a fantasy novel.
Their style reflected everything about the day: thoughtful, unconventional, and entirely their own.
Traditional Scottish Wedding Rituals with a Personal Twist
Hidden within the woodland at Dunkeld House Hotel, the ceremony took place beneath the trees, surrounded by only their closest family and friends.
The ceremony celebrated several beautiful Scottish wedding traditions, beginning with a traditional handfasting ceremony, where ribbons were wrapped around their joined hands, the origin of the phrase “tying the knot.” It was a meaningful moment that honoured Scotland’s rich wedding heritage while symbolising the beginning of their marriage.
The couple also shared a drink from a traditional Quaich, Scotland’s cup of friendship, trust, and welcome. Rather than following tradition with whisky, they made the ritual entirely their own by filling the Quaich with cider instead, a small but wonderfully personal detail that perfectly reflected their personalities.
Combined with heartfelt vows that left not many dry eyes, the woodland ceremony felt incredibly intimate and deeply emotional.
Sunshine, Laughter and Celebrating in the Heart of Perthshire
Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed an afternoon filled with incredible food, laughter, and conversation beneath the Scottish sunshine. For a venue known for its spectacular landscapes, Dunkeld House Hotel offered the perfect backdrop for guests to relax while taking in the beautiful surroundings.
One of the things I love most about photographing weddings here is how effortlessly the day flows between elegant gardens, peaceful woodland, and riverside scenery, all without ever needing to leave the grounds.
River Tay Wedding Portraits
As the evening approached, we explored some of my favourite portrait locations around Dunkeld House Hotel.
The towering woodland created the most romantic setting before we wandered down to the banks of the River Tay, where the soft evening light filtered through the trees. It’s one of the reasons I love photographing Perthshire wedding, there’s an incredible variety of landscapes within just a short walk.
The day ended in the most unforgettable way.
Laughing together, the newlyweds kicked off their shoes and ran straight into the River Tay. It wasn’t planned, it wasn’t posed, it was simply one of those joyful, spontaneous moments that perfectly summed up the entire celebration.
Those are always my favourite photographs, the ones that feel completely real.
